Will Dharma Productions go for an IPO?

Yash Johar founded Dharma Productions in 1976, creating a landmark in Indian cinema. His son Karan Johar now leads the company as CEO. Additionally, Apoorva Mehta serves as the Executive Director. The company produced iconic films like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” and “My Name Is Khan.” Furthermore, they revolutionized Bollywood’s storytelling style significantly.

Their subsidiary, Dharmatic Entertainment, launched in 2018 under Karan Johar’s leadership. Moreover, it focuses on creating digital content across various formats. The company produces popular shows like “Koffee With Karan” and “Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives.” Additionally, they created successful web series like “Ajeeb Daastaans.” Most importantly, their latest venture “Ae Watan Mere Watan” shows their commitment to diverse storytelling. Their content reaches millions through streaming platforms regularly.

Who is Adar Poonawalla?

Adar Poonawalla is the CEO of Serum Institute of India (SII), the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume. Born on January 14, 1981, he is the son of Cyrus Poonawalla, the founder of SII. Under Adar’s leadership, SII has expanded its global presence and played a pivotal role in producing vaccines for diseases like polio, measles, and more recently, COVID-19. He oversaw SII’s partnership with AstraZeneca to produce Covishield, a major COVID-19 vaccine. Known for his business acumen and philanthropic efforts, Adar Poonawalla has been instrumental in making vaccines affordable and accessible worldwide, especially for low-income countries. His contributions to global healthcare have earned him recognition on the international stage.

Dharma Production Stake Sale

Karan Johar recently grabbed headlines by selling 50% of Dharma Productions and Dharmatic Entertainment to Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, for ₹1,000 crore. Johar will still maintain creative control, serving as executive chair while owning half of the shares. Apoorva Mehta will continue managing the company’s operations and strategic direction as CEO. This strategic partnership is expected to bolster Dharma’s expansion and creative ventures, leveraging Poonawalla’s investment and business expertise.

IPO Plans

Following its well-publicized acquisition of a 50% share to Adar Poonawalla for ₹1,000 crore, Dharma Productions has generated a lot of conjecture over a possible initial

public offering. Is this action a component of a broader plan to go public? As of now, there are no comments from the office of Karan Johar or Adar Poonawalla. However, with Dharma’s ongoing supremacy in Indian cinema and its expanding internet presence through Dharmatic Entertainment, industry insiders are aglow with the potential.

A lot of people question if an IPO is imminent. Investors are keeping a careful eye on this entertainment giant to see if it will welcome public shareholders. Given the significant actions that have already been taken, will Dharma Productions be the next major public market listing?
