In the face of a challenging diagnosis, Della Larsen has turned to technology to ensure her voice continues to resonate with future generations. Diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, in April 2023, Larsen embarked on a mission to preserve her voice for her grandchildren, who she may never meet.
Embracing Technology for Legacy
To achieve this, Larsen utilized voice banking technology, a groundbreaking tool that allows individuals to record their voices for future use. She recorded herself reading 30 children’s books, each linked with a QR code to a private audio recording. This innovation ensures that her voice can be a comforting presence for her family, particularly her future grandchildren.
Inspiring Others Through Social Media
Larsen’s initiative has not only been a personal journey but also a source of inspiration for many facing similar challenges. Through social media platforms, she shares her fight against ALS, offering hope and encouragement to others. Her story has garnered attention, serving as a testament to the power of resilience and technology.
Recognition and Support
Her efforts have not gone unnoticed. The ALS Therapy Development Institute recently honored Larsen with the Mary Lou Krauseneck Courage & Love Award, recognizing her bravery and dedication. During the award ceremony, she communicated through a device powered by advanced voice AI technology, supported by Bridging Voice and The Scott Morgan Foundation.
