Microsoft announces ₹25,500 Cr investment in India for Ai and cloud infrastructure growth

Microsoft has announced a significant $3 billion investment in India over the next two years to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure. This bold move underscores Microsoft’s commitment to making India an AI-first nation, fostering innovation, and equipping the workforce with critical AI skills. The announcement was made by Satya Nadella, Microsoft chairman and CEO, during the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru.

Strengthening AI and Cloud Infrastructure

This investment will expand Microsoft’s cloud and AI infrastructure in India, adding new data center campuses across the country. With three data center regions already operational, Microsoft plans to launch a fourth in 2026. This expansion is expected to create a scalable AI computing ecosystem that supports the country’s rapidly growing AI startups and research communities.

Upskilling Millions for the AI Era

As AI becomes a critical skill for the workforce, Microsoft is taking proactive steps to equip India’s talent pool. Under the ADVANTA(I)GE India program, the company has already trained 2.4 million individuals in AI skills, surpassing its initial target of 2 million by 2025. Over 65% of the trainees were women, and a significant portion came from tier II and III cities, ensuring inclusivity.

Building on this success, Microsoft now aims to train 10 million more Indians by 2030. This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with government bodies, nonprofits, and corporate partners, helping bridge the digital divide and prepare the workforce for an AI-driven future.

Boosting India’s AI and SaaS Ecosystem

To further accelerate India’s AI journey, Microsoft Research Lab launched an AI Innovation Network. Collaborative projects, like the one with Physics Wallah, showcase how AI can transform sectors like education by making learning more personalized and accessible.

In partnership with SaaSBoomi, Microsoft is also propelling India’s AI and SaaS ecosystem towards a trillion-dollar economy. This collaboration is set to impact over 5,000 startups and 10,000 entrepreneurs, focusing on regional development in Tier II cities, creating over 200,000 jobs, and attracting $1.5 billion in venture capital funding.

Driving Sustainability with AI

Microsoft’s new data centers in India will operate with zero water consumption for cooling, using a closed-loop system instead. The company has also secured renewable energy contracts, directing part of the revenue to environmental justice initiatives that support women’s livelihoods, rural electrification, and water quality improvement.

By committing to be carbon-negative, water-positive, and zero waste by 2030, Microsoft is leading the way in integrating sustainability into its AI strategy. These efforts align with its global Datacenter Community Pledge to be a responsible neighbor and a force for positive change.

Conclusion

Microsoft’s $3 billion investment in India marks a transformative step in accelerating the country’s AI adoption, fostering innovation, and equipping the workforce with future-ready skills. With its focus on infrastructure, skilling, sustainability, and ecosystem development, Microsoft is not only contributing to India’s growth but also setting a benchmark for responsible and inclusive AI advancement globally.
