In an interesting turn of events, Navdeep’s Paralympic silver was upgraded to a gold after Iran’s Sadegh Beit Sayah, who initially won gold, was disqualified.
In a surprising twist, Navdeep’s Paralympic javelin silver medal has been upgraded to gold after Iran’s Sadegh Beit Sayah, the original gold medalist, was disqualified. Sayah was stripped off a gold medal minutes after the final ended; the Iranian had created a Paralympic record to clinch the gold. According to the official Olympic website, Sayah was disqualified due to “unsporting conduct.”
India’s Navdeep had earlier won a men’s javelin throw (F41) silver in the event with a personal best effort of 47.32m.
Starting the competition with a foul, the 23-year-old para-athlete from Haryana came up with 46.39 metres in his second attempt, propelling him to the second place. But it was his third throw that electrified the stadium.
With a remarkable throw of 47.32 metres, Navdeep shattered the Paralympic record and surged into lead, only for Iran’s Iran’s Beit Sayah Sadegh to better the Indian’s mark. He was awarded a gold medal, but the Iranian was soon disqualified.
India’s medal tally at the Paralympics now includes seven gold, 10 silver, and 13 bronze.
